1914 - Dingman No. 1 Turner Valley, Alberta

Stories abound as to how the surface gas and oil seepages on Sheep Creek were first noticed in the 1800’s by aboriginal people, farmers and cattlemen. Pioneer William Herron noticed the seepages in 1911 and later tested it to find it was wet gas. He quickly purchased two farms and leased 7,000 acres of Crown lands. The 1914 discovery led to more oil discoveries in 1924 and 1936.
