In 1926 oil was reported southwest from Lloydminster along the Battle River near Ribstone Creek. The first recorded well drilled was Imperial Ribstone No. 1 in September of 1926 with reports of gas and oil shows. Ten more wells were drilled by at least six companies in the Ribstone area up until 1936 with frequent coal, oil and gas shows.
