The Oilsands stretch for hundreds of kilometres along the banks of the Athabasca River. The first knows European to personally take note of bituminous sand in the Athabasca area was North West Company fur trader Peter Pond in 1778. Then, starting in 1875, came the first detailed examination of the bitumnious sands by the researchers of the Geological Survey of Canada.
