1944 - Saskatchewan Discovery

In Saskatchewan, exploration drilling for petroleum dates back to the 1880s and occurred in the southeast. But lacking proper equipment and capital, Saskatchewan was at the outset unable to reap the benefits. Lloydminster was the first to set up a commercial oil well in 1944, though it represented only a modest discovery. This raised spirits and spurred further exploration.
